  • Murbach Abbey

At the foot of the Grand Ballon, the Abbey Church of Murbach awaits you by the side of a shady road. The Monastery was one of the most powerful in the Holy Roman Empire in the 11th and 12th centuries. Rebuilt after the Thirty Years' War, it remains an impressive edifice.
You can admire the typical red sandstone Romanesque facade and the tympanum of the Southern Portal. There are also 2 sculpted lions - one of which pulls its tongue out at visitors! A pleasant walk which should not be missed!

    ---------------------------------
The interior of the abbey is currently undergoing renovation until mid-December 2023, but it remains open and accessible to the public.
